Dovete sapere che, dato che a settembre il nostro contratto di affitto scade, Nina ed io abbiamo deciso di comprare un appartamento; e così ieri siamo andati a vederne qualcuno, dopo aver risposto a degli annunci sul giornale. L’agente immobiliare ci ha portati in un grande appartamento, ma in una zona non proprio delle migliori. L’appartamento era abbastanza sporco, una cattiva pubblicità per un’agenzia immobiliare; arrivati alla finestra, la signora ci fa: “ed ora ammirate la meravigliosa vista delle Twin Towers!”, ma non si vedevano altro che i parafulmini (non sapeva a che tipo di vista siamo abituati noi), e sotto una specie di baraccopoli, veramente squallido. Comunque finita la visita l’agente aveva appuntamento con un’altra coppia per mostrare un'altra unità, così per curiosità abbiamo deciso di vederla anche noi. Ad un certo punto l’agente ci dice (a me e Nina): Vedete, l’appartamento è veramente un ottimo affare, molto migliore di questo, sicuramente un affare migliore!”. Ma si può, con due possibili acquirenti davanti, sminuire così il posto che si vuole vendere? Sono rimasto senza parole… Ah, tra l’altro l’ha menata della vista anche nel secondo posto, ed era ancora peggio del precedente.

Alla fine siamo andati a vedere il condominio dove abita un nostro amico, un bel posto, se avremo fortuna vedrete presto di cosa si tratta.

Ah, nella foto siamo io e Nina, con indosso gli abiti nazionali filippini, pronti per andare alla celebrazione dell’indipendenza delle Filippine, che si è tenuta presso l’ambasciata delle Filippine.

You have to know that, since next September our rental contract is expiring, Nina and me have decided to buy an apartment; so yesterday we went to visit a few units, after answering to the newspaper classifieds. The agent took us to a big apartment, but not in the best area. It was also quite dirty, not a good image for a real estate agency; when we arrived at the window the agent told us: “and now admire the amazing view of the Twin Towers !”, but we could see nothing but the lightening rods (she did not know which view we are used to), and around the condo a kind of barracks suburb.

Anyway, at the end of the visit the agent had an appointment with another couple for showing another unit, so we joined them just for our curiosity. At one point she tells us (to me and Nina): “You see? The unit I showed you is much better, a real better buy!”. Is it possible, in front of possible buyers, say that the apartment they are viewing is not that great?? I really was without words… Ah, furthermore she also tried to amaze us with the stupid view of the Twin Towers once again.

In the end we went to visit a condo where a friend of ours lives, a nice place, if we are lucky you will see what is that about soon.

E poi, c’è stata una volta in cui ha indicato un albero di mango con l’aspetto della foto:

Però, c’è da dire, è romantico quanto carino. Venerdì scorso abbiamo festeggiato i nostri due anni insieme in un ristorante giapponese al Maya Hotel. Il cibo era fantastico, e tanto… abbiamo mangiato pasta di fagioli con polpa di granchio, due versioni di cordon bleau, salmone in olio d’oliva, tonno marinato, e sashimi assortito. Penso che siano state più o meno sei portate ciascuno. Alla fine ovviamente c’era il dolce. Io ho ordinato la torta alla cioccolata, e quando è arrivata, sembrava una scatoletta bordeaux con un fiocchetto. Sembrava così realistica che l’ho toccata col dito per essere sicura che fosse cioccolata. Ma il dito non entrava nella cioccolata, perciò lo stupore è aumentato. E così ho visto un bigliettino… per me! Ho guardato la torta un’altra volta, e sembrava sempre più una scatoletta! L’ho presa, aperta, e cosa c’era dentro? Un anello (foto sotto), un bellissimo, bellissimo anello! Da parte del mio amore.=)

Once in a while, my boyfriend amazes me on how he can turn simple day-to-day words to such exotic phrases:

Massi: Do you think we are allowed to put needles on the wall? (On the subject of hanging new picture frames in our rented apartment… he meant nails)

Massi: What do you call those nails on the tree? (He means thorns…this was after he learned of nails)

Massi: Amore, why don’t you wash our new table carpets? (we just acquired new sets of placemats)

And then, there was the time when he pointed at a mango tree and it was looking like this:

But then, he is as romantic as he is cute. Last Friday, we celebrated our second year anniversary at a Japanese restaurant in Maya Hotel. The food was great, and a lot…we had bean curd with crab meat, two versions of cordon bleau, salmon in olive oil, marinated tuna, and assorted sashimi. I guess six or seven dishes in succession, for each of us. The finale of course was the desert. I ordered a chocolate cake, and when it arrived, it was looking like a purple box tied with a little ribbon. It looked so real that I did a little tap to make sure it’s a chocolate cake. But no chocolate got stuck in my finger so I was even more amazed. And then I saw a little note… for me!!! I looked at the chocolate cake again, by this time, it was looking more and more like a box! I picked it up, and opened it, and what did I find ? A ring, a beautiful, beautiful ring! From il mio amore. =)

Eh, lo so, una vergogna tutte queste settimane di assenza, chiedo venia. Ma veramente sono proprio preso dal lavoro, adesso capisco anche perché Nina non scrive mai.

L’ultima volta eravamo alle vacanze, ormai dovrò ridurmi ad una breve sintesi degli episodi rimanenti:

·         Per comprare un paio di ciabatte una sera abbiamo girato tre ore, tutti a d*Mall vendono ciabatte, ma le ho prese solo alla fine perché le commesse hanno improvvisato una canzone per me.

·         Avete mai immaginato di dare da mangiare ai pesci con le vostre mani? Io anche a Nemo ho dato da mangiare, un emozione incredibile trovarsi a nuotare in mezzo a banchi di pesci tropicali.

·         Parasailing: divertente, ma dopo un po’ si comincia a sentire l’effetto dell’imbracatura…

·         Massaggio al resort: fantastico, il lettino col buco per la faccia e sotto una vasca con i fiori. Peccato che la punta della testa era ancora scottata, e quando il massaggio vi è arrivato l’unica cosa a cui posso paragonare il dolore sono decine di aghi conficcati nello stesso punto…

Ok fine vacanza. Lo scorso weekend la compagnia dove lavora Nina ha organizzato la cena annuale con pernottamento incluso in hotel. L’evento si è svolto presso il centro Sunway Lagoon, dove vi sono un grosso centro commerciale, hotel, parco divertimenti e chi più ne ha più ne metta. Il pomeriggio, dopo aver posato la borsa in camera, Nina ha deciso di farsi l’acconciatura al parrucchiere nel centro commerciale. Io, per ingannare il tempo, mi sono seduto da Starbucks col mio frappuccino. A un certo punto, ero al telefono con la mamma (baci!) quando ho notato che di fronte a me sempre più persone scattavano foto coi cellulari verso l’alto. Appena sporto ho visto che sopra al tetto c’era un incendio, dal fumo nerissimo, e quindi sono rimasto a vedere gli sviluppi sorseggiando la mia bevanda e chiacchierando al telefono. Nina si è inserita nella telefonata preoccupata, così l’ho invitata a raggiungermi. Infatti l’incendio era proprio nella zona del  parrucchiere, e così è scappata coi capelli mezzi bagnati (per fortuna, così mi ha dato la macchina fotografica per documentare il fatto). Dopo pochi minuti, a incendio sedato, sono tornato in camera a rilassarmi, e Nina a sistemare i capelli.

La cena è stata molto divertente, con giochi, premi, e c’era anche una delle più famose pop star del paese (non chiedetemi il nome) che ha cantato un poco. Ma lo special guest non era lui, bensì il Maestro Jedi che ha promesso di prendere in considerazione la nostra domanda di diventare apprendisti…

I know, all these week of silence are a shame, I beg your forgiveness. But I am really focused with my new job, now I understand why Nina never writes.

Last time we were on holiday, but now I have to reduce it to a summary:

·         One night we walked three hours to find a pair of slippers. Every shop in d*Mall sell slippers, but I bought only when the girls working in a shop made up a song for me.

·         Have you ever imagined of feeding fishes with your hands? I even fed Nemo itself, an incredible emotion to swim surrounded by all these tropical fishes.

·         Parasailing: funny, but after few minutes I started to feel the effect of the belts…

·         Massage at the resort: paradise, the bed with the hole for the face and underneath a ball with flowers. Unfortunately my head was still burnt, so when the massage arrived there, the only thing I can compare to that pain is a bunch of needles stubbed in the same point…

End of the holidays. Last weekend, Nina’s company organized the annual dinner, with a night in hotel included. The event was in Sunway Lagoon, a place with a huge mall, hotels, a theme park. During the afternoon, after leaving the bag in the room, Nina decided to go to the hairdresser in the mall, so I sat down in Starbucks to pass time with my frappuccino. I was at the telephone with my mom, when I noticed that more and more people were taking picture above my head, so I went out to check, and the roof of the mall was on fire! Such a black smoke, so I staid on the road side to check what happens with my drink and my phone call. Nina interrupted the call and asked me if I was sage, so I invited her to join me. The fire was in the zone of her hairdresser, so she ran down with the hair half wet (good thing, so I could get my camera). After few minutes, once the situation was under control, I wnt to rest in the hotel, and Nina to finish her hair-stuff.

The dinner was very funny, there were games, prices, even one of the most famous pop stars in the country (don’t ask me his name), who sang few tracks. But the special guest was not him, it was the Jedi Knight who promised us to consider our application…

Sono sicuro che la gran parte di voi non sa come sia fatta Boracay, cosa ci sia sopra, quindi questo post vi sarà utile. Prima di tutto l’isola è piuttosto piccola, in molte cartine geografiche delle Filippine non è neanche riportata, c’è solo il nome.

Una volta sbarcati con una delle tipiche barche della zona, si vede che le strade non sono più larghe di due metri. Risultato: a Boracay non ho visto macchine, solo i tricicli e i minivan dei resort che portano gli ospiti qua e là. Molte case sono ancora fatte di legno e paglia, e la gente conduce una vita molto modesta. Ciononostante, tutti hanno un’aria felice, le persone sono sempre molto cortesi ed amichevoli.

Il centro nevralgico dell’isola si chiama d*mall (il centro commerciale), ma non ha per niente l’aspetto dei mostruosi e alienanti centri commerciali a cui tutti siete abituati; infatti un assetto del genere mi fa pensare più a un bazar che ad un centro commerciale. Comunque, attraversata questa piccola zona, si arriva sulla spiaggia principale di Boracay, divisa in stazione 1, 2 e 3. In alta stagione sono molto frequentate, e se si vuole un po’ d’ombra si deve 1) pernottare in un resort sulla spiaggia (costosi) ed usufruire delle attrezzature, oppure 2) usufruire dei lettini dei resort consumando bevande e pietanze, ma visto che i lettini sono pochi se arriva un residente bisogna sloggiare. Questo ha in parte contribuito alla mia bruciatura, perché dopo che abbiamo dovuto andarcene dal Discovery Shores Resort abbiamo camminato per tutta la spiaggia, solo 20 minuti ma sommati agli altri 20 di bagno si sono fatti sentire, nonostante la crema protettiva.

Le attività diurne sono molteplici: snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, moto e sci d’acqua, giri in catamarano, massaggi vari, equitazione e chi più ne ha più ne metta. Per questo camminando lungo la spiaggia si viene continuamente interrotti da promotori delle varie attività che, a differenza di altri paesi dove si urla per richiamare clienti, ti approcciano come se volessero venderti una dose di eroina…

Il momento migliore di godersi la spiaggia è ovviamente il tramonto: le barche, i bambini che giocano, i paracaduti, tutto diventa ombre che solcano il cielo rosso e disturbano il scintillio che si forma sul mare, finché l’oscurità non prevale. A questo punto, girandosi verso la terra ferma, ci si accorge che da tutti i locali sono spuntati tavoli e poltrone sulla spiaggia, pronti ad intrattenere i turisti per tutta la notte.

I’m sure for most of you, if I say Boracay. nothing lights up. How it looks like, what’s on it, so this post’s gonna be useful. First of all it is a quite small isle, not even drawn in many maps, there’s only the name.

Once arrived, after the trip on one of the typical boats, you can see roads no wider than 2 metres. Result: I saw no cars In Boracay, only tricycles and minivans from the resorts, taking tourists around. Many houses are still made of wood and leaves, and people make a quite poor/simple life. Despite this everyone there looks happy, people are very kind and friendly.

The logistic centre of the isle is called d*mall, but it doesn’t look like a mall at all. Personally, for how it is made, I would call it d*bazaar. Anyway, once crossed this zone, there’s the main beach of Boracay, divided in Station 1, 2, 3. During high season they are so crowded, and if you want some shade you’d better 1) Book a beachfront resort (quite expensive) for using their facilities, or 2) Use their facilities purchasing many drinks and dishes, but since there are only few places, if some resort costumer arrives you have to go away. That’s also why I got a sunburn, because we had to leave the Discovery Shores Resort and take a walk on the beach, even if only 20 minutes, but adding 20 more minutes of swimming the effect was granted, no matter the sun protection cream.

There’s much to do in Boracay: snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, jet ski, water ski, boat trips, horse riding, and more. For this reason there are so many promoters approaching you offering any of these activities, but instead of yelling like in many countries, here they come as if they wanted to offer you a heroin dose…

The best moment to enjoy the beach is of course the sunset: the boats, the children, the parachutes, all become shadows breaking the red sky and disturbing the water shining, until darkness comes. At this point, turning back to the land, you see that all the bars and restaurants put so many tables and chairs, ready to entertain them all night long.

Siamo arrivati dopo due notti insonni ed una giornata a Manila, quindi stanchi morti. Quando ho visto l’aereo che ci avrebbe portato da Manila a Caticlan mi aspettavo di trovare anche gli aerei  dei kamikaze giapponesi alla fine il volo è andato più che bene)… Arrivati sull’isola il solito personaggio che ti aiuta per fare su mance ci ha indirizzati al resort, molto accogliente (vedi foto sotto) e con del personale veramente disponibile e gentile. Dopo tutto il tram tram Nina si è ammalata, per cui la prima sera, invece del ristorante, siamo andati dal dottore (un posto che somiglia al retro-camper di un tipico kebabbaro in piazza) e poi dritti a letto. E così i primi tre giorni, per gran parte del tempo, siamo rimasti a goderci la bellissima stanza e la TV via cavo. Ovviamente ho anche trovato il tempo per scottarmi col sole tra un film e l’altro, mezzora di quelle giuste là sono fatali.

Ma visto che una settimana da raccontare è infinita, nei prossimi post accennerò solamente agli episodi curiosi, tanto lo sapete cosa si fa al mare…

It was a long time, but with the holiday and the new job I really cannot find some 30 minutes to write (now it’s 23:44, and I am home alone since Nina went to visit her family for the whole week). In the future I’ll write about the job, for the next few posts I’ll tell you about the trip.

We arrived after two sleepless nights and one day in Manila, meaning tired dead. When I saw the plane that took us to Caticlan from Manila I was only expecting to see also the Japanese planes of the kamikazes (finally the plane was more than ok)… Arrived on the isle the usual guy heling you for making up tips directed us to the resort, which was very nice and cosy (see pictures below) and with very kind staff. After all the travelling Nina got sick, so the first eve instead of the restaurant, we went to the doctor (in a place looking like a typical food stall) and then straight to sleep. So the first three days we enjoyed the beautiful room and the cable TV. Obviously, between one movie and another, I found the time for a sunburn, 30 minutes there are lethal.

But since onw week is endless to write, I will just write the main episodes in the next posts, anyway you all know what people do at the seaside…

Nel frattempo lo scorso week-end è passato di qui Riccardo, di ritorno dall’Australia, e si è fermato un paio di giorni. Purtroppo gli orari dei voli non ci hanno permesso di passare molto tempo insieme, ma è stato comunque molto piacevole rivedere un compaesano, nell’attesa che ripassino anche Lucio e Manuel (ma ritorneranno mai in Italia?)…

When you say that a holiday brings a new air! Last June, after my trip to Cambodia I found my job. And next month, after another holiday Boracay, Philippines), I will start a new job. For many reasons I started to look around, also because I wanted to try something not science-related. So I found this job in sales (one of the world most difficult jobs), rubber, for a company founded by an Italian here in KL. I had to think about it for a while, since changing field is not so simple, but such a challenging job seems a very stimulating and promising chance. Furthermore the office is only 15 minutes far from my house, and very near to Nina’s one, so it seems there are all the conditions for a great adventure. Let’s see.

In the meanwhile, last weekend Riccardo passed by here, on his way back from Australia, and spent a couple of days with us. Unfortunately the flights schedules didn’t allow us to stay together so long, but it was nice anyway to see again a compatriot, waiting for Lucio and Manuel to come back as well (will they ever do?)…

E l’occasione? La independencia!

Ha vissuto per quattro mesi con la mia famiglia, e ieri sono partiti per Manila…

Ma sono sicura che nonostante sia felice di avere di ritorno la sua libertà, gli mancheranno i frullati super freschi e gustosi!

So, yesterday, Massimo prepared his ultimate dinner special: Spaghetti con Tiger Prawns and Squids, and opened a bottle of the Rezzadore Sauvignon Bianco. For dessert, he prepared the Budino-alla-Mamma, bought in Italy last December.

And the occasion? La Independencia!

He has been living with my family for four months, and they left yesterday early morning bound for Manila…

But I’m sure that despite that he is happy to have his freedom back, he will be missing my mother’s super-fresh and tasty fruit blend!
