Il numero di ieri del New Straits Times, uno dei due quotidiani locali in inglese più autorevoli, riportava in prima pagina i risultati di un’indagine sugli allevamenti animali in Malesia, con risultati piuttosto allarmanti: su 100 campioni di carne bovina, ovina e pollame ricevuti mensilmente dai laboratori del Ministero Della Salute, il 2% di questi presentano tracce di Salbutamolo, un broncodilatatore. I campioni di manzo, montone, bufalo e oca invece raggiungono percentuali di risultati positivi fino al 20%. Inoltre sembra che negli ultimi 10 anni la situazione sia andata peggiorando. I polli vengono iniettati con Cloramfenicolo e Nitrofurano, due antibiotici cancerogeni. Anche Terbutalina e Clanbuterolo vengono usati, ma in dosi minori in quanto costosi.

Tutti questi composti sono stati inclusi nella liste delle sostanze velenose nel 1996 e perciò bandite, ma l’autore dell’articolo scrive che il Ministero era a conoscenza del loro uso per quanto riguarda gli allevamenti di maiali, ma ora la loro presenza è stata riscontrata anche nelle altre carni. Il Ministero non ha ancora ricevuto un resoconto ufficiale sull’indagine. Il vice-direttore di uno dei Dipartimenti per i Servizi Veterinari, secondo l’articolo, ha commentato così: “Non abbiamo mai controllato questi allevamenti, ma forse c’è da fare qualcosa”, confortante o no?

Nel 2004, ha detto il Ministro Della Salute, la percentuale di maiali contenenti composti di questo tipo era tra il 70 e l’84%, ed una recente ricerca ha confermato il dato. Ora 31 allevamenti di maiali sono sotto quarantena, e solo 4 di essi hanno fatto richiesta per controlli a parte del Dipartimento dei Servizi Veterinari. Yesterday’s New Straits Times, one of the two most important local newspapers in English, had in the first page an article with the results from tests on animals here in Malaysia, with quite alarming results: around 2% of the samples received monthly by the lab showed traces of Salbutamol, a bronchodilator. Samples of beef, mutton, and buffalo and duck meat make up 20%. Furthermore it seems that in the last 10 years the situation got worse. Chickens are injected with Chloramphenicol and Nitrofuran, two cancer-causing antibiotics. Terbutaline and Clanbuterol were also used, but in lower dosage since they’re more expensive.

All these compounds were listed under the Poisons Schedule in 1996, then they were banned, but the article says that the Ministry acknowledges that farmers use them on pigs, but now their presence has been detected also for other kinds of meat. The Ministry had not received an official report yet. The Deputy Director of one of the Veterinary Services Departments commented the news in this way: “We have never monitored these farms but maybe something needs to be done”, inspiring, ain’t it?
