Ultimamente sul giornale ci sono notizie sulla vicenda taxi imbroglioni tutti i giorni. L’avvicinarsi dell’evento “Visit Malaysia Year 2007” sta facendo aumentare l’attenzione per questo problema. La faccenda è iniziata l’altro ieri, con l’articolo sulle tariffe over 200 di cui vi ho parlato, ed è proseguita ieri con un altro intervento riguardante, oltre che alle tariffe disoneste, al cattivo comportamento di molti tassisti, con testimonianze di persone che, dopo aver rifiutato una corsa senza l’uso del tassametro e ad un prezzo esagerato o semplicemente lamentandosi alla fine della corsa per il prezzo troppo elevato, sono anche state aggredite verbalmente dal tassista con frasi umilianti urlate loro davanti a tutti i passanti (una signora dice che l’hanno fatta piangere più di una volta…).

Stamattina il giornale riporta la risposta dei tassisti “onesti”; molti intervistati affermano di riuscire a malapena ad arrivare a fine mese applicando le tariffe regolari, poiché devono pagare circa il 50% del ricavato ad un’agenzia che detiene la licenza. Dicono inoltre che la loro richiesta di una licenza individuale (che permetterebbe loro di risparmiare molto) viene rifiutata ogni anno senz’alcuna spiegazione. Questi tassisti poi si lamentano del fatto che i “pochi” tassisti disonesti infangano il nome di tutta la categoria, poiché come in ogni situazione della vita il cattivo comportamento di pochi si ripercuote su molti.

Ovviamente la verità starà nel mezzo, posso solo confermare quello che vedo quotidianamente coi miei occhi: la normale tariffa prevede che il primo chilometro o i primi due minuti siano coperti dal fisso di 2 RM. Finora tutti i taxi che ho osservato hanno tarato il tassametro a 900 metri, non so per quanto riguarda il tempo. Dopo i primi 2 RM il tassametro scatta di 10 centesimi ogni 150 metri od ogni 45 secondi. Qui mi sembra sia abbastanza giusto, ma non è semplice valutare piccole variazioni come queste (che non sono nemmeno molto rilevanti). Questa è la prassi per i tassisti onesti, e non c’è da lamentarsi. Poi ho notato una cosa che mi fa pensare se un tassista proverà ad arrotondare a fine corsa o no: il pagamento all’autostrada. I taxi hanno il finestrino manuale, che richiede tempo per essere aperto e chiuso; i furbi aprono direttamente la portiera per fare meno fatica, perciò essendo più furbi penso che dovrò stare attento. Ovviamente è un’osservazione personale e non assoluta.

In definitiva per prendere il taxi senza farsi imbrogliare non serve molto, basta verificare il tassametro prima di salire e buttarci un occhio durante la corsa. Ovviamente è una scomodità, e purtroppo ogni volta che si prende un taxi si vive una situazione di tensione e condizionamento, perché non si sa cosa può capitare.

Lately it is possible to find news about the cheating cab drivers on the newspapers everyday. The upcoming event “Visit Malaysia Year 2007” is bringing increasing attention to the problem. The case started the day before yesterday, with the article about the over 200 RM fares which I told you about, and continued yesterday with another bulletin about, besides the ridiculous fares, the bad behaviour of many drivers, with witnesses of several people who, after refusing a ride with no meter and at an expensive price or simply complaining for the fare at the end of the ride, have been verbally abused by the drivers with humiliating sentences shouted by the drivers in front of the other people (a woman said she was reduced to tears more than once…).

This morning the newspaper was showing the “honest” taxi drivers’ reply; many of the interviewed say that with the regular fares they can barely provide for the family expenses, since they have to pay around 50% of their incomes to an agencies having their licence. They also say that their request for a personal private licence (which would make them save quite a lot) has been rejected since many years without an explanation. These drivers then complain about the fact that a few bad apples are jeopardizing the reputation of the whole category, because as in every situation in life, the misbehaviour of few have consequences on many.

Obviously the truth is in the middle, I can only confirm what I see daily with my eyes: the normal fare contemplates a fixed of 2 RM for the first 1 kilometre or 2 minutes. So far all the cabs I observed have the fixed fare adjusted on 900 metres, I don’t know about the time. After this first fixed 2 RM the meter switches every 150 metres or 45 seconds. This seems quite ok, but it’s not easy to notice such a small change (and not so important anyway). This is the practise with the honest drivers, and I don’t complain. Then I noticed another aspect, to understand if I have to be careful or not: the payment of the toll. Taxies have a manual window opening, that take some time to be opened and closed; the arch ones just open the door and put the hand out for making it easier. Since they are arch, I know I will have to be careful and check the meter. Of course it is only a personal consideration and not absolute.

In the end take a cab without being cheated is  not a big deal, just verify the meter before take the ride and check it once riding. Obviously it’s not comfortable, and unfortunately every time one wants to take a taxi, a tension and conditioning feeling comes, making it stressful, since you don’t know what can ever happen.

Domenica scorsa, passeggiando per il centro, mi sono imbattuto nell’astronave che vedete nella foto. Sulle prime pensavo che fosse un’auto pubblicitaria in esposizione, poi ho visto che è partita e così mi sono affrettato a fotografarla. La sorpresa più grande è stata vedere che a guidare c’era una ragazza! Questa proprio non me l’aspettavo, d'altronde anche il giornale oggi scriveva che il numero di auto “pimpate” in Malesia è in costante aumento. L’articolo dice che molte persone, trattandosi di parti a volte costose, usano materiali scadenti o pezzi non coperti da assicurazione. Per ovviare a questi inconvenienti (e per accrescere le entrate), diverse casa automobilistiche locali hanno iniziato ad immettere sul mercato kit per personalizzare la propria auto, con parti originali e coperte da assicurazione. Quindi aspettiamoci auto sempre più ardite e sgargianti…

Last Sunday, walking in the centre, I saw the starship you can see in the picture. At the beginning I thought it was an exposed commercial car, but then I saw it moving so I rushed and took some shots. The biggest surprise is that the driver was a chick! I really did not expect this, besides the newspaper today wrote that the number of pimped cars in Malaysia is constantly increasing. The article says that many people, getting expensive parts, use low quality material with no insurance coverage. To obviate these inconveniences (and to increase the incomes) several motor brands are started to sell kits for pimping one’s car, with original parts and insurance coverage. So let’s expect more and more plucky cars.

Succede sempre qualcosa all’ultimo momento; stamattina, poco prima di recarci alla conferenza per seguire l’intervento del vice Primo Ministro, il mio capo ha ricevuto una telefonata e siamo dovuti partire con diversa destinazione a causa di un’emergenza lavorativa. Avevamo ancora la possibilità di recarci al pranzo ufficiale, me un’altra telefonata ci ha fatto anticipare una riunione, prevista nel tardo pomeriggio, all’ora di pranzo. In conclusione mi sono incravattato per niente (e mi sono dimenticato la foto per il post).

Stasera per cena siamo andati ad un ristorante tailandese, per la cena di addio di Richard, il capo di Nina, che si trasferisce a Singapore. Sapevo che la cucina tailandese è piccante, ma non pensavo fino a questo punto. Le portate sono state servite in ordine di bruciore crescente, e non sono riuscito a finire la seconda, una ciotola di Tom Yam (zuppa tipica in Asia). Per fortuna le ultime portate non erano così piccanti, almeno non sono rimasto con la fame.

Una notizia “curiosa” riportata dai giornali: quattro studenti cinesi hanno preso un taxi; hanno pagato la corsa la bellezza di 250 RM, per un tragitto che ne prevede 15/20. L’autista usava il tassametro, che invece di scattare ogni 45 secondi scattava ogni 5. I loro amici uguale, 200 RM per la corsa. Il governo mostra preoccupazione, perché l’hanno prossimo la Malesia compie 50 anni, e c’è una grossa promozione del turismo, ma episodi come questo purtroppo non sono rari, e non regalano una buona immagine né al paese, né tanto meno alla categoria dei tassisti.

There’s always something at the last moment; this morning, before leaving to the conference for the speech of the Deputy Prime Minister, my boss received a call so we had to go to a different place for a work emergency. We still had a chance to attend the official lunch, but another call made us anticipate a meeting, programmed in the late afternoon, at lunch time. Eventually I dressed smart for nothing (and I forgot the picture for you).

This evening we had dinner in a Thai restaurant, for the farewell dinner of Richard, Nina’s boss, who’s moving to Singapore. I knew Thai food to be hot, but I didn’t imagine that much. The dishes were served with increasing degree of “fire”, and I couldn’t even finish the second one, a Tom Yam ball ( a classic soup here in Asia). Luckily last dishes were not so hot, so I managed not to go to sleep hungry.

A “curious” news from today’s newspapers: four Chinese students took a taxi; they paid the ride 250 RM, for a distance that cost no more than 15/20 RM. The driver was even using the meter, but instead to switch every 45 seconds it was switching every 5 seconds. Their friends same things, 200 RM “worth” ride. The government is worried, because next year Malaysia will be 50 years old, and there’s a huge promotion of tourism for next year, but episodes like this are common, and they don’t give a good impression of the country and of the taxi drivers category.

Stamattina dovevo andare col mio capo ad una conferenza sulle energie alternative, per la quale il mio capo ha ottenuto degli inviti gratuiti, ma non sapevo partecipassero le più alte cariche politiche del paese, e così ieri sera ho dovuto chiamare il mio capo affinché mi portasse una camicia seria ed una cravatta. Così mi sono cambiato nel bagno di un distributore di benzina lungo la strada.

L’evento si svolgeva presso il centro convegni del Sunway Lagoon Complex, dove ci sono un parco divertimenti, un residence, un hotel, ed un centro commerciale dentro al quale passa il lago artificiale con tanto di barche. All’esterno vi è anche una grande piramide con una leone accovacciato davanti ad essa.

Alla registrazione ci hanno consegnato il materiale illustrativo tipico di ogni conferenza, più un “piccolo” omaggio: una borsa in pelle per computer portatile molto bella, veramente una bella sorpresa. Abbiamo assistito solo agli interventi iniziali, che erano quelli che ci interessavano, dopodiché siamo andati al lavoro.

Siccome non avevo il portatile con me, il capo mi ha prestato la macchina per andare a casa a prenderlo, così h seguito Lyna, la nostra segretaria, che andava a casa (abita dalle mie parti) perché non si sentiva bene. Sulla via del ritorno, dopo qualche chilometro, stavo appena finendo di compiacermi del fatto di non aver sbagliato strada benché non fossi mai passato da quelle parti, ed a quel punto mi sono smarrito, proprio nel bel mezzo del quartiere indiano vicino al centro città. Dopo aver girato per venti minuti buoni nel traffico sono riuscito a trovare la via per l’ufficio; è stato un viaggio comunque utile, poiché mi sono confrontato per la prima volta col traffico del centro e con tutti i motorini, con esito più che positivo.

Dopo i lavoro sono andato a KLCC con Nina per comprare una camicia ed una cravatta per domani, visto che forse incontrerò qualche importante personalità; ieri avevo visto un avviso fuori da G2000, dove comprando due camicie se ne aveva una in regalo, così ci siamo diretti là. Purtroppo la promozione è finita ieri, ma oggi c’erano i saldi. Non contento della gamma di capi proposti (anche se è un negozio di camicie) ho iniziato a girare per il centro commerciale per un’ora senza trovare nulla, così sono tornato da G2000 ed ho comprato quel che cercavo (forse domani vi carico la foto).

Ah, oggi mi è successa una cosa incredibile: ero fermo ad uno stop con la macchina, e ho notato che nella strada in cui mi stavo per immettere stava piovendo a dirotto, mentre su di me non è caduta nemmeno una goccia! Stranezze tropicali…

This morning I had to attend a conference about renewable energies with my boss, for which he received two free invitations, but I didn’t’ know the most important politicians were there, so I had to ask my boss for a serious shirt and a tie yesterday night. So I changed my clothes in the toilet of a gas station on the way.

The event was taking place at the Sunway Lagoon Complex Convention Centre, complex where there are also a hotel, a theme park, a residence, and a mall with the artificial lake passing inside with boats as well. Outside there was a huge pyramid with a lion lying behind it.

At the registration they gave us the usual paper stuff, typical of every conference, plus a “simple” gadget: a very nice leather laptop bag, really a nice surprise. We attended the presentations we were interested in, after that we left for going to work.

Since I didn’t have my laptop with me, my boss lent me his car and sent me home, following our secretary (she lives near my neighbourhood) who was going home because feeling sick. On my way back to the office, I had just finished to congratulate with myself for not getting lost, when I got lost, in the heart of the Indian suburb near the city centre. After going around for twenty minutes in the traffic I managed to find my way to the office; it was a good experience anyway, since I had the chance to challenge the traffic of the centre with all its motorbikes, with more than positive results.

After work I went with Nina to KLCC to buy a shirt and a tie for tomorrow, since I may get introduced to some important people; yesterday I saw a special offer at G2000, 3×2 shirts, so I went there. Unfortunately this promotion finished yesterday, but today a sale started. Since I was not satisfied of the choice (it is a shirt specialized shop) I started to walk around the mall for more than on hour, without finding anything, so I went back to G2000 and bought what I needed (maybe I post the picture tomorrow).

Ah, I forgot an amazing thing: I was standing at a crossroad with the car, and I noticed that in the road I was about to go through it was raining like hell, while where I was, 1 metre far, not even a drop! Tropical freaks…

Oggi avevamo in programma di passare la giornata in centro per fare delle compere,  ma la giornata di ieri è stata parecchio stancante e quindi ho dormito fino alle undici. Siamo andati in centro dopo pranzo, e la prima tappa è stata Lo Yat Plaza, centro commerciale dedicato alla tecnologia multimediale, dove nell’atrio al pian terreno si svolgeva un torneo di videogames, con un premio di 20.000 RM, ed i giocatori delle due squadre gridavano per parlarsi (il gioco era una simulazione di guerra), e le loro grida arrivavano fino ai piani più alti. Dopo breve siamo usciti e ci siamo diretti ad un altro centro commerciale a cinque minuti di passeggiata, Times Square (quello a tredici piani di qualche settimana fa), per mangiare un gelato. Sì, perché venerdì scorso eravamo andati nello stesso posto a vedere Casino Royale (bellino, ma James Bond lascia a desiderare secondo me, e perde nel confronto con Sean e Roger) ed avevo visto un punto vendita di Gelatomio. Il gelato è veramente buono, fatto come si deve senza grassi e preparati vari. Ormai è raro trovare un gelato così persino in Italia, figuratevi la sorpresa di trovarlo a Kuala Lumpur! E così ci siamo andati già due volte in tre giorni (Nina mi controlla perché non ci vada più altrimenti finirei lo stipendio in gelato…), un toccasana per il palato e per il cuore, che mi fa sentire un po’ più in Italia.

Dopo la merenda ci siamo diretti a KLCC per le ultime compere, e lì invece abbiamo fatto la pausa caffè perché c’è un bar che fa l’espresso Illy, cinque - dieci minuti e via, come in Italia.

Verso sera siamo tornati a casa, abbiamo cenato ed ora ci rilassiamo un po’, in attesa di iniziare una nuova settimana…

Today we planned to spend the day in the city centre for some shopping, but the beach yesterday was so tiring that today I slept till eleven. We moved after lunch, and the first stop was Lo Yat Plaza, a mall dedicated to the multimedia technology, where in the hall they organized a videogames tournament, with a 20,000 RM prize, and the players were shouting to each other among the team mates (the game was a war simulation), and their shouts even reached the highest floors. After few time we went to another mall, five minutes walking far, (Times Square (the 13 floors one, which I wrote about few weeks ago), to have an ice cream. Yes, because last Friday we were in the same mall to watch Casino Royale (nice, but James Bond is not so good, and he cannot stand Sean and Roger talking about style) and I saw a Gelatomio sale point. The ice cream is very good, made with no fat and no preservers. Nowadays is difficult to find such an ice cream even in Italy, you can imagine the surprise to find it in KL! So we already went there twice in three days (Nina started to control me that I don’t go there so much, otherwise I would spend my whole salary there…), a real panacea for both my palate and my heart, which makes me feel al little bit more in Italy.

After the break we went to KLCC for the last shopping, and there we had a coffee break since there is a bar making the espresso Illy, five – ten minutes like in Italy.

We went back home in the evening, had dinner and now we relax a little bit, before starting a new week…
