Bahasa Melayu prima lezione
Bahasa Melayu first lecture
Thursday, June 29th, 2006
What kind of language am I learning? At the end of the first Bahasa Melayu lecture I exited the school with a kind of breathlessness because of the pronounce problems, between swallowed syllables and various vocal modulations, backache because I was curve on the notebook looking for words and a stomach block because of bafflement and disorientation (it's not easy to have three languages in the head, next time I have to switch Italian off…). Don’t worry, It’s not that Malay is a dangerous language, I was the worst, since Nina already studied a little bit of Malay, Richard speaks some Indonesian that is similar and Tiff, his wife, speaks Chinese that sounds kind of similar to Bahasa.
The teacher, Joulivin Chong, is very witty, at first sight even too much, because she laughs with the “O-shaped” goose-kind mouth, like the Chinese ladies in our movies full of stereotypes. Richard had my same impression, but in the end we both changed our minds because, with the motto “language brings fun”, Jouly revealed herself as a good and patient teacher.
The school is inside a mall, in a zone where I only passed by once before and that yesterday intrigued me. Since we were too early for the class, we stopped for a break in Secret Receipe, famous for all the cakes, but we only had a frappuccino (frappe + cappuccino). After the class instead we went to the KLCC food court for dinner, where we had fish and chips, which I’ve been wanting for some days.
Next lecture is Friday eve (so I am studying a lot today), so we’ll go out with Richard and Tiff for dinner, and then at home for my national team!
